Push For The Playoffs

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to visiting Muhlenberg 61-56 Saturday at Helfferich Hall.  The game, which was the last at home for seniors Alli Rosati, Jen Sroba, Kristy George, Jackie Thomas and Lindsay Teuber, was a dogfight from beginning to end.

The Bears (13-12, 12-8 Centennial)were lead by senior forward Lindsay Teuber (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basils) who compiled yet another double-double, scoring 15 while grabbing 21 rebounds.  Senior guard Alli Rosati netted 14 points and six rebounds in the effort.  Sophomore guard Diamond Lewis (East Windsor, N.J./Stuart Country Day) contributed nine points for the Bears.

Muhlenberg (20-5, 15-5 Centennial) was lead by Alexandra Chili, who netted 18 points and grabbed seven boards.  Erin Laney contributed eleven points and six boards.

The first half saw the Bears go up by as many as nine with 15:26 remaining.  A strong late run by the Mules saw Muhlenberg up by as many as eight with 2:48 remaining but a lay-up and free throw by Teuber and a field goal by Rosati sent the game into intermission with the Bears trailing by only three, 33-30.

The second half saw the Mules extend their lead to six for the majority of the period, with the Bears coming within four multiple times.  A basket by sophomore forward Devin Butchko (Cream Ridge, N.J./Villa Victoria Academy) with 5:41 to play brought the Bears within one, 49-50, but was not able to convert on the old fashioned three point play for the tie.  After a foul on Chili, senior guard Kristy George (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) knocked down a three with 4:59 remaining.  On the next Bears possession, junior Amber Yacenda (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) knocked down two free throws to put Ursinus ahead 54-53 with 4:14 remaining in the contest.

After a pair of free throws hit by Caldwell put the Mules up 3 and a long three point shot missed by George and subsequent foul by Butchko sent Chili to the line the Mules extended their lead to five to end the game.

With Johns Hopkins locking up a playoff spot and finishing first in the conference with a win over Franklin & Marshall last Tuesday, they will host the tournament next weekend.  Muhlenberg's win today gives them the two seed, while F&M's win over Dickinson gives the Diplomats the third seed in the tournament.  With a win over Swarthmore, Haverford claims the fourth seed, with Ursinus claiming the fifth.

The Bears will take on Haverford Wednesday at Haverford, tip is set for 7 pm.
