Bears drop first contest in new year to York (Pa.) 65-57

YORK, Pa. - York (Pa.) junior guard April Sparkman had a game-high 17 points as the Spartans (5-4) defeated Ursinus (5-4) 65-57 on Saturday in the semifinals of the 2010 Hampton Inn Coaches vs. Cancer Women's Basketball Classic hosted by York College of Pennsylvania.

Ursinus will take on Norwich or The College of New Jersey on Sunday at noon in the consolation finals.

For the Bears, junior forward Alex Shivers (Pine Beach, N.J./Toms River South) and junior guard Jaclyn Hilf (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) each had 12 points, while sophomore forward Lindsay Teuber (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Basil's) had ten.

Shivers was playing in her first game this season, after missing all of last season and the first eight games of this season due to a knee injury.

The Bears found themselves in a hole early, trailing by as much as 11 in the first seven minutes of the game. Trailing by ten (21-11) with 10:17 left, Ursinus rallied back to within two as senior forward Julie Bown (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Penn Charter) had a tip-in with two seconds left to make the halftime score 34-32 at intermission.

In the second half, Ursinus took its first lead at 37-36 on a three-pointer from Hilf with 18:02 left. Ursinus took its biggest lead at 51-45 with 8:34 left on a jumper by Teuber.

After the Spartans grabbed the lead at 53-51 with 5:24 left, Ursinus took its last lead at 54-53 with 5:03 left on a three-point play by Teuber. That would be the last field goal by the Bears in the game, as the Bears got three points the rest of the way.

Sparkman made two foul shots with 4:48 left to give York the lead for good. A pair of foul shots by freshman forward Amber Yacenda (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) with 2:44 left got Ursinus to within two at 58-56. But, the Bears would not get any closer.

Ursinus held a commanding 40-35 lead on the glass, with Teuber picking up eight. The Bears had 16 offensive rebounds in the contest. Sparkman had seven caroms for the Spartans, to go along with six blocks.
