Softball Swept at #6 Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team had No. 6 Moravian on the ropes in the opener of Thursday's non-conference doubleheader, but one big inning gave the Greyhounds the spark they needed to race past a deficit and into a sweep.

Junior Faith Carson and freshman Heather Lazer each recorded a pair of hits in the opener as the Bears (13-21) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held it into the fourth before a prolific Moravian offense woke up. The Greyhounds (28-4) scored two two-out runs in the fourth and exploded for five more in the fifth en route to a 7-2 victory, then rode a one-hit shutout by Amanda Carisone to an 8-0, five-inning decision in the nightcap.

Game 1: Moravian 7, Ursinus 2

Senior ace Kaitlyn Willis had high-powered Moravian off balance in the early innings, cruising through the first three with only one baserunner allowed and retiring the first two batters in the fourth.

Willis' dominance bided time for the Bears to put two runs on the board, the first courtesy of a clutch two-out RBI single off the bat of Carson in the third. Lazer kicked off the fourth with a base hit up the middle off Moravian's Josie Novak, went to third on a throwing error, and scored on junior Kayla Quinn's bunt down the third-base line for a 2-0 lead. An infield single by junior Gabrielle Manto loaded the bases with only one out, but Novak got out of the danger with no further damage.

With two down in the fourth, three consecutive singles paired with an Ursinus error allowed two Moravian runs to score.

Brooke Wehr's RBI single provided the Greyhounds the go-ahead run in the fifth, which also featured an RBI double from Janae Matos and a three-run homer off the bat of Kat Spilman.

Lazer finished 2-for-3 with a run and Carson was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Ursinus.

Willis (7-10) was charged with seven runs – six earned – on eight hits with a pair of walks. Freshman Gabby Ilyes came on in the fifth and picked up five outs, two of them on strikeouts, while conceding just one hit.

Game 2: Moravian 8, Ursinus 0 (5)

Freshman Morgan Comfort held off the Greyhounds amidst a perilous first two innings, stranding the bags full in the second to keep Ursinus within 1-0.

Moravian's Lauren Goetz made it 3-0 with a two-run single in the third, and a muffed throw on a would-be groundout allowed a fourth run to score. Goetz put the hosts up 8-0 with a grand slam in the fourth.

Carisone took a perfect game into the fifth and final frame, but junior Callie Crouse broke it up with a leadoff single on a 1-2 pitch. The Moravian hurler retired the next three Bears to complete a one-hitter and improve to 14-2 on the season.

Goetz was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and six RBI for Moravian, while Comfort (6-9) gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits and five walks in three innings. Sophomore Jennifer Hammons pitched the fourth for Ursinus.
