Softball Swept at First-Place Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader at first-place Gettysburg on Saturday.

Ursinus (11-13, 2-7) struggled to score runs against a tough Gettysburg pitching staff, plating three runs in the two games. Junior Sammi Donato led the way with a 3-for-5 day at the plate and also scored a run for the Bears.

Game 1: Gettysburg 4, Ursinus 2

The Bullets (13-11, 9-1) plated two runs in the second inning to gain an early lead. The frame featured a double and a hit by pitch, and both base runners came around to score following Ursinus miscues.

Freshman Morgan Comfort responded back with an RBI double in the third inning. Comfort drove home senior Rachel Hyman, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the stanza.

Gettysburg scored a run each of the third and fourth innings to increase its lead to 4-1. Winning pitcher Aileen Reilly (5-7) kept the Bears off the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth. Reilly went on to throw a complete game, yielding two runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out four hitters.

Ursinus senior Kaitlyn Willis (6-6) pitched well in defeat as she hurled through six innings, yielding four total runs, two of those being earned. Willis gave up six hits and a walk while fanning six batters.

Donato registered two base knocks for the Bears.

Gettysburg's Wendy Folfas and Shelby Baker each went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Folfas' two hits were doubles and she also batted in a run.

Game 2: Gettysburg 9, Ursinus 1 (6)

The Bullets' hitting and pitching was too much for the Bears, as they went on to take the second game, 9-1.

The Bears were held to three hits in the second game. Junior Kayla Quinn drove in Donato in the third inning to tie the game, 1-1, and plate the visitors' lone run of the nightcap.

Gettysburg plated three runs on two hits and an Ursinus error in the fourth stanza to pull to a 4-1 advantage. The Bullets went on to have a big sixth inning, scoring five in the frame on four hits.

The Bullets were led by Sarahrose Jonik, Brynn Griffith, and Stephanie Leonardo who each knocked in two Bullet runs. Jonik and Leonardo each homered to help the Bullets to victory.

Gettysburg's Morgan Clauser (7-3) went the distance, yielding a lone run on three hits while walking one and striking out six Bears.
