Softball's Bats Quiet as Bears Drop Pair

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Sophomore Sammi Donato hit her first career home run, but the Ursinus College softball team's bats were otherwise silent as the Bears suffered a pair of losses on Monday, the second day of action at the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic.

Both setbacks came at the hands of undefeated opponents for the Bears, who fell 5-2 to Eastern Mennonite in the morning before a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Wesley.

Game 1: Eastern Mennonite 5, Ursinus 2

Ursinus pulled even at 1 on sophomore Gabrielle Manto's RBI single in the top of the second inning, but the Royals used back-to-back doubles to go up 3-1 in the bottom of the frame.

Donato's solo blast with two outs in the top of the third cut the gap to 3-2 in the third, but Eastern Mennonite (4-0) pulled that run back in the same inning on an RBI single by Alexa Sheets. The Royals tacked on another in the fourth, and Sydney Reath made the lead stand up with three scoreless frames of relief.

Freshman Faith Carson scored a run and was one of five Bears to register a hit, along with fellow rookie Isabella Dewes and junior Kaitlyn Willis.

Willis surrendered a run without a hit before exiting the game after the first inning. Senior Devan Cinalli (0-1) came in for the next two innings and allowed two runs, and sophomore Kayla Quinn permitted only an unearned run and one hit during the fourth and fifth frames. Freshman Jennifer Hammons worked a perfect sixth.

Game 2: Wesley 2, Ursinus 0

Ursinus registered six hits in its second contest of the day, but were unable to push a run across in support of Hammons. The rookie right-hander hurled her second straight complete game, allowing just two runs on nine hits with six walks and a pair of strikeouts.

The Bears were unable to solve Lindsay Siok, who struck out six without a walk to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Wolverines (6-0) opened the scoring in the second, when Karina Cardona's one-hopper took a tough bounce and rolled all the way to the wall and allowed Megan DiRubbio to spring home with the game's first run. Wesley added another in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Brooke Retkowski.

Sophomore Callie Crouse was one of six Bears with a base hit, hers going for extra bases with a double in the fourth that sent classmate Samantha Garritano to third with two outs. But Siok struck out freshman Marissa Beebe to end the threat.

Sophomore Brittany Gasser, pinch-running for junior Rachel Hyman, went to third with just one out after a fifth-inning stolen base, but Ursinus failed to get her home. The Bears put two runners on in the sixth and seventh, but could not break through.

Garritano had an outfield assist in the first, cutting down a would-be Wesley run with a strong throw to the dish.
