Four Earn NFCA Scholar-Athlete Status

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Four members of the 2016 Ursinus College softball team have been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Scholar-Athletes for their outstanding performance in the classroom during the past academic year.

Senior Zoe Heinke, junior Casey Derella, and freshmen Brittany Gasser and Samantha Garritano all received the honor, given to student-athletes who achieved a GPA of at least 3.5 for the 2015-16 academic calendar.

Heinke had an outstanding senior season as a two-way standout for Ursinus. She led the Bears in RBI (21), ranked second in hits (33), and was third in both runs (17) and batting average (.303). Heinke broke a school record with seven RBI in a 12-4 victory over Gordon during the club's spring break trip to Florida. Heinke also posted the best pitching campaign of her career as well, going 5-7 with a 2.81 ERA and seven complete games.

Gasser and Garritano turned in strong rookie campaigns for the freshmen-laden Bears. Garritano hit .287 with a double, a triple, and seven RBI in 28 games as the primary centerfielder, while the speedy Gasser finished second on the team with six stolen bases.

A second team All-Centennial Conference selection in 2014, Derella smacked two doubles and a triple and drove in four runs in 23 appearances.

Ursinus finished the 2015 campaign with a 17-19 overall record and a 7-9 mark in conference play, the Bears' highest CC win total since 2013.
