Willis Named CC Pitcher of the Week

LANCASTER, Pa. – After closing the 2016 campaign with a thoroughly dominant stretch of starts, Ursinus Softball sophomore Kaitlyn Willis was named the Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday.

Willis tossed a complete-game shutout in each of her three starts for the Bears (17-19, 7-9), who blanked Swarthmore in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader for their first back-to-back shutouts in a CC series since 2010. She allowed only eight hits and struck out 17 to just two walks in 21 spectacular innings, lowering her ERA to a CC-leading 1.96 and running her season-ending scoreless innings streak to 27. Willis' ERA in conference games was a miniscule 1.31.

Willis started the week with a three-hitter in a 7-0 rout at Alvernia on Tuesday before throwing every pitch of the weekend's twofer against the Garnet. She fanned eight with one walk in a 5-0 victory in the opener, then came back to twirl a two-hitter with five punch-outs in the nightcap, which Ursinus won 1-0 thanks to senior Zoe Heinke's RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. Willis took a perfect game into the fifth inning of that outing, conceding only a leadoff single in the fifth and a one-out base hit in the seventh.

Willis, who was also tabbed Pitcher of the Week on April 4, is the first Ursinus pitcher to lead the CC in ERA since Lauren Davis-Macedonia in 2010. At the conclusion of the regular season, she ranked tied for third in wins (10) and fifth in strikeouts (79). Her four shutouts are the most in the conference, and her 14 complete games stand second; she stands third in opponent batting average (.232) and fifth in innings pitched (107.1).

Willis' ERA and strikeout totals are the best by a Bear since Jennilyn Weber, who posted a 1.91 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 2012. The right-hander's dominance was a big reason why Ursinus finished with its highest overall win total since 2012, and its most CC wins since 2013.
