Softball Rides Willis to Season-Ending Shutouts at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Kaitlyn Willis was at the top of her game in Ursinus Softball's season-ending doubleheader at Swarthmore, helping the Bears finish the 2016 campaign on a high note with a pair of shutout wins.

Willis (10-8) hurled a three-hitter in a 5-0 victory in the opener, then came right back with a two-hit blanking in the nightcap, which Ursinus won 1-0 thanks to senior Zoe Heinke's RBI single in the top of the seventh. The Bears' back-to-back shutouts against the Garnet (10-26, 1-15) were their first in a Centennial Conference series since 2010, when they racked up four straight against Franklin & Marshall and Washington College. Ursinus finished the season 17-19 overall and 7-9 in conference play, their most league victories since 2013.

Willis twirled shutouts in each of her last three starts, giving her four for the season. She allowed a total of eight hits in 21 innings during that stretch, striking out 17 to just two walks to lower her ERA to 1.96, which leads the CC at the conclusion of the regular season. Willis is the first Ursinus pitcher to top the conference in ERA since Lauren Davis-Macedonia in 2010.

The Bears' ace needed little help on this day, but got plenty of early run support in the opener. An RBI single by freshman Callie Crouse started the scoring in the second, and Ursinus piled on with four more runs in the third. The visitors opened the frame with four straight singles from sophomore Rachel Hyman, freshman Alexa DelMonte, freshman Gabrielle Manto, and freshman Sammi Donato and, after a fielder's choice, sophomore Bridget Winay made it 4-0 with a two-run single. Crouse's RBI groundout completed the outburst and left Willis with plenty of cushion.

The right-hander struck out eight to just one walk in the opener, and did not allow a baserunner to reach third. Sara Planthaber had two of Swarthmore's three hits.

Crouse finished 2-for-4 with two RBI at the plate, where DelMonte was 3-for-3.

The teams combined for just six hits in Game Two, as Willis matched zeroes with Emily Bowman for the first six frames. Ursinus finally broke through in the seventh, when Winay started the inning with a base hit. Pinch-runner Brittany Gasser went to second on a wild pitch and took third on a fly ball by Crouse. Two batters later, Heinke came through with a two-out infield knock, plating Gasser with the go-ahead run.

Swarthmore got a one-out single in the seventh, but Willis closed the door with a lineout and a strikeout.

Willis fanned five without a walk in the nightcap, while Bowman allowed just four hits and struck out seven. Willis took a perfect game into the fifth before Planthaber led off the frame with a single, and the Bear ace promptly erased the next seven Garnet batters before Elizabeth Curcio's one-out base hit in the seventh.

Ursinus closed the season with wins in five of its last seven games, allowing a mere two runs in those five victories.
