COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Hot off their best offensive game of the season, the Ursinus softball team (10-22) swept non-conference opponent Delaware Valley (3-27) 9-0 in five innings and 16-8 in five innings for their final home series at Snell Field Thursday evening.
The Bears were led by Zoe Heinke going 5-7 with five runs and four RBI's including a double and two triples. Deanna Madison also had an impressive day going 2-4 with five runs, one RBI, four walks and a solo home run.
In game one the Bears started out hot, scoring five runs in the first two innings from Caitlin Whelan reaching first on an error by the right fielder, scoring Zoe Heinke. Next Nikki Djambinov singled down the right field line, scoring Shelby Edelson and Caitlin Whelan taking a 3-0 lead in the first.
With two outs in the second Deanna Madison crushed the first pitch for a solo home run over the right field wall. With back to back triples from Heinke and Whelan Ursinus took a 5-0 lead at the end of the second.
The Bears would wait till the bottom of the fourth to get back on the board with another triple from Zoe Heinke to center field scoring Deanna Madison. Next Caitlin Whelan singled to right field driving in Heinke, and Morgan Worthington finished the four run inning with a doubled to center field.
In a wild game two, the Bears looked to be in control with an 8-2 lead in the beginning of the fifth inning. The Aggies stormed back scoring six runs to make it 8-8 going in to the bottom of the inning.
The comeback began with a Delia Mercurio single and then the Bears forced four straight walks to take the lead. Shelby Edelson expanded the lead with a RBI single. The Bears would get another four runs on a sacrifice fly, wild pitches, walks and from an errant throw into Nikki Djambinov. The Bears would load the base with a commanding 15-8 lead for Zoe Heinke at the plate. On a two-one pitch Heinke drove a hard grounder that split the shortstop and second baseman driving in the game winning run, enforcing the eight run mercy rule in the fifth inning.
The Bears will look to finish their season with a doubleheader at Swarthmore Saturday afternoon.
