Haverford takes a pair from softball

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Ursinus was swept by Haverford in a Centennial Conference softball doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

In game one, Ursinus nearly pulled off a six-run rally in the top of the seventh, before falling 6-4. In game two, Ursinus scored two in the seventh in a 5-2 loss.

Game one saw the Fords (18-8, 7-3 Centennial) plate all their runs in the bottom of the first off of Ursinus (7-19, 2-10 Centennial). Of the six runs, only two of them were earned off of pitcher Zoe Heinke. Heinke, who went 0.2 of an inning, struck out one and walked one in falling to 3-11. Senior pitcher Caitlin Whelan pitched the final 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit.

Ursinus started the seventh with Ellen Goldstein bunting for a single, then advancing to second on a single to left by Heinke. Whelan would single to center to load the bases. With two outs, catcher Nikki Djambinov doubled to right scoring Goldstein and Heinke. Whelan and Djambinov would score on a RBI single by Morgan Worthington. Worthington would be thrown out at second trying to advance to end the game.

Ursinus finished game one with six hits, with Djambinov and Worthington each having two RBI.

Game two saw Ursinus be held without a hit till the sixth, when Heinke doubled to left. Trailing 5-0 heading into the seventh, Ursinus got the bases loaded with one out, when Delia Mercurio getting a two-run single up the middle to score Worthington and Shelby Edelson.

Whelan took the loss in game two, falling to 4-7. She struck out three and walked one in four innings of work. Heinke pitched two innings, allowing just one hit.

Ursinus hosts Muhlenberg on Saturday.
