Softball swept by F&M

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Both ends of Thursday's Centennial Conference doubleheader between Ursinus and Franklin & Marshall came down to the seventh innings, with the Diplomats (12-6, 3-1 Centennial) sweeping both games (5-9, 1-3 Centennial) by one run.

Game one saw the Diplomats throw out the tying run at the plate in a 5-4 win, while Ursinus' rally in the seventh fell one run short in a 7-6 loss.

The opener saw the Diplomats strike first senior right fielder Rachel Laufer doubled to center scoring senior center fielder Alicia Kukoda. Kukoda would double home a run, and later score on a RBI single in the second to give the Dips a 3-0 lead.

Ursinus struck back in the bottom of the frame as junior catcher Nikki Djambinov scored on a RBI single from sophomore infielder Shelby Edelson.

F&M took a 4-1 lead in the fifth when Laufer scored on a RBI double by starting pitcher senior Kaitlin Zampino. Ursinus would score two in the bottom of the fifth when Djambinov and junior first baseman Ellen Goldstein had RBI singles to get within 4-3.

The Diplomats would get an insurance, and as it turned out a needed, run in the top of the seventh when freshman designated player Megan Ryan scored on a RBI double by Kukoda.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ursinus would get two on for freshman designated player Morgan Worthington. She singled to left scoring freshman pinch runner Sandra Ricardi, but, Djambinov was thrown out at the plate on a relay through from left, short and to the catcher to end the game.

Kukoda finished 2-for-4 for F&M with two RBI and two runs scored, while senior shortstop Maloria Sassaman had three hits.

Ursinus saw Djambinov and Worthington collect two hits.

In the circle, Zampino got the win as she walked three and allowed two earned runs, while Ryan got the save, her first of the year. Sophomore pitcher Zoe Heinke took the loss for Ursinus, striking out one and walking three.

In game two, F&M took an early 3-0 lead after the first when Zampino hit a two-run double to center, while Sassaman had a RBI single. The Diplomats would go up 7-0 after 5 ½ innings, before Ursinus scored three runs in both the sixth and the seventh.

In the sixth, Heinke singled home junior centerfielder Delia Mercurio, while Heinke would score on a RBI fielders choice by Djambinov. Djambinov would later score on a RBI single by Edelson.

The seventh saw Mercurio reach on an error, and later score on a RBI single by Heinke. Heinke would score on a RBI single to left by Djambinov to put the Bears within two at 7-5. A deep sacrifice fly by Worthington scored Djambinov to cut the lead to 7-6. However, Edelson would ground out to end the game.

Zampino finished 3-for-4 for F&M in the game, with Sassaman getting three RBI.

For Ursinus, Heinke had two hits, while Djambinov had two RBI.

In the circle, Ryan got the win in game two to improve to 4-1, while junior pitcher Justine Lohrey got the save in the final 1.1 innings of work. Senior Caitlin Whelan took the loss for Ursinus.

The Bears are scheduled to play at Moravian on Sunday, weather permitting.
