Splitting with Swat

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus closed its regular season on Saturday, splitting a daytime doubleheader with the Garnet of Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference softball action.  With the win the Bears qualify for the conference playoff tournament.

The Bears broke out the bats in an 11-0 win, while the Garnet defense silenced them in game two as the Garnet took a 1-0 decision.

The Bears scored runs in bunches, including a five-run third inning.  The game was over when the Garnet failed to score in the fifth inning as the game was decided by the ten run rule.

In game one, junior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Frankilnville, N.J./Delsea Regional) was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI, while junior center fielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) was 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI.

Junior catcher Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century) had a monster day, hitting 3-for-3 with three runs scored and five RBI, including a home run to start off the second inning.

Junior pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) got the win, improving to 13-8 on the season. She struck out two batters and allowed five hits.

In game two, the Bears had only five hits and could not score a run despite a fine pitching performance from junior Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown).  She took the loss; allowing four hits and one earned run despite striking out four in seven innings of work.

The number four seed Bears will play against host and number one seed McDaniel College Saturday at 12:00 pm in the Centennial Conference playoffs.
