Starting Off Right

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Starting a six-game, three-day run the Ursinus College softball team started things off right with a sweep of Haverford on Thursday afternoon.

The Bears needed one run in the first game to take a 1-0 win, while scoring nine in a 9-2 win in the back half of the doubleheader against the Fords (15-14-1, 2-10 Centennial).

Ursinus (16-13, 5-5 Centennial) scored its lone run in the first game in the second inning as senior third baseman Cassie Brown (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored on a throwing error.

From there, junior pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) took over, as she allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out ten.

In the fifth inning, a bunt single by junior centerfielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) gave her 100 hits in her career.

Game two saw the Bears bust out the bats for 12 hits, and eight runs between the third and fourth innings. Gentile and junior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) both had three hits, while Pfrommer had a game-high four RBI. Senior catcher Rachel Vietheer (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had two hits in the second game, while junior pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) had two RBI.

Schymanski pitched four innings, striking out three and walking two to improve to 6-5, while sophomore pitcher Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) got her first save of the season by pitching three scoreless innings in relief.

Ursinus will host Dickinson Friday, as that doubleheader has been moved up from Sunday due to the threat of bad weather on Sunday.
