Softball takes one from LVC

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team earned another split on Tuesday as the Bears won game one against Lebanon Valley 6-5, before falling in the night cap 5-1.

Ursinus (14-13) got two hits from senior third baseman Cassie Brown (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) in the opening game win, while eight of the ninth starters hit safely.

The Bears took an early 3-0 lead on the Flying Dutchmen (21-11) as junior center fielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley), freshman left fielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township), and junior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) all had RBI hits.

In the fourth, Lebanon Valley responded back with four runs, with RBI hits from junior Alexa Maddy and freshman Jasmine Dutton.

Ursinus took the lead for good with three in the fifth, as junior right fielder Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown)  scored on a  wild pitch, before sophomore second baseman Monica Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and Brown scored on a throwing error.

Junior pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) got the win in relief of starter sophomore Caitlin Whela (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII). Weber pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run. Whelan walked three and allowed two earned runs in four innings of work.

In game two, Ursinus' lone run came in the first as Gentile scored on a wild pitch. Ursinus was held to just three hits in the loss.

Schymanski took the loss, falling to 5-5. She pitched four innings, striking out three and walking one.

Ursinus will host Haverford on Thursday.
