Softball splits with Washington

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team split a pair of games from Washington College on Thursday afternoon.

The Bears (12-9, 2-2 Centennial) were held scoreless in a 2-0 loss in the opening, but, plated four runs in the second game to take a 4-2 win over the Shorewomen (14-11, 6-2 Centennial).

In the opener, the Bears were held to just three hits, all singles as sophomore Monica Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East), junior Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century) and senior Cassie Brown (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) all hit safely.

Junior Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) took the loss, striking out six and giving up two earned runs in the loss.

In game two, Ursinus scored three runs in the first three innings, then added in an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Washington had closed the gap to 3-2.

Junior Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) scored on error with two outs in the first, while junior Sam Sinisi (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and senior Amy Sido (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) had RBI hits in the third. Sido hit a double in the inning.

In the fifth, junior Caitlin Higgins (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) hit a RBI single to right that scored starting pitcher junior Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown).

Schymanski went the distance, striking out three and walking two while allowing zero earned runs.

Sido and junior Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) both finished with two hits in the game, as did Gentile.

Ursinus heads to Gettysburg Saturday.
