Climbing The Ranks

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team split a doubleheader with ninth-ranked Rowan on Thursday afternoon, as the Bears won game one 4-3 in nine innings while the Profs (18-1) defeated Ursinus (8-7) 2-0 in game two.

All the action in game one took in the latter innings, as Ursinus took a 1-0 lead after the fifth as junior outfielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) singled home junior starting pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley).

In the seventh, Rowan took the lead as Shannon Costello and Nicole Escudero had RBI hits.

Ursinus would tie the score in the bottom of the inning as freshman pinch runner Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) scored on a fielders choice.

In the eighth, both Rowan and Ursinus would score before Ursinus scored a run in the ninth with one out as junior shortstop Kelsey Coyne (Stowe, Pa./Pottsgrove) singled home sophomore Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) who was placed on second on the international tie breaker rule.

Senior designated player Kate Kehoe (Mariposa, Calif./Mariposa County) finished with two hits for Ursinus, while Gentile, Weber and Whelan scored runs.

Weber got the win, striking out three and allowing just two earned runs.

In game two, Ursinus was limited to just one run as Nikki Djambinov (Ventor City, N.J./Atlantic City) got a single right in front of the catcher with one out in the seventh.

Junior pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) took the loss, striking out four and allowing two earned runs.

Ursinus heads to Moravian on Saturday.
