Softball drops home opener to Elizabethtown

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Playing for the first time in 18 days, the Ursinus College softball team drop their home opener to Elizabethtown by scores of 4-0 and 9-7 on a windy Monday afternoon.

In the first game, Elizabethtown (12-8) scored three runs in the first and one in the sixth while holding Ursinus to just five hits. Junior centerfielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) accounted for two of the hits, while junior pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) had a triple.

Weber took the loss, striking out four and walking just one while giving up four earned runs.

Freshman first baseman Jessica White and junior third baseman Elly McCarthy had two hits each in the first game.

In game two, Ursinus rallied to within one run twice during the game but could not complete the comeback. The Bears scored three runs in the fifth and sixth in the loss. Gentile went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while junior pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Sophomore pitcher Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII Regional) took the loss, as she struck out one and walked one in 4.2 innings of work.

Ursinus will open Centennial Conference play tomorrow at Franklin & Marshall.
