Softball still alive after day one at Centennial tourney

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team advanced to the consolation final of the 2011 Centennial Conference Softball tournament on Saturday afternoon at Dickinson Park hosted by Dickinson College.

In their first game of the day, the fourth-seeded Bears fell to top-seed Dickinson 2-0, but, rallied back to defeat Washington College in the elimination game 3-2 to advance to the consolation final.

The Bears (18-17) will play Dickinson at 10 a.m. on Sunday in the final. If the Bears win, they would play third-seeded Muhlenberg (24-15) at noon in the championship final. Since Muhlenberg is currently 2-0 in the tournament, Ursinus would have to beat Muhlenberg twice if the Bears advance to the final.

In the Dickinson contest, the Bears were held to just two hits by senior pitcher Allison Jordan. Jordan, who threw two perfect games in the final week of the season, struck out 11 and allowed base hits to sophomore catcher Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century) and sophomore centerfielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley).

Ursinus tied the score in the third as after Gentile reached on an error, she scored on a RBI ground out by senior designated player Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) with one out.

Ursinus took the lead in the fifth as senior third baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Newtown Square) singled with one out, then was lifted sophomore pinch runner Sam Sinisi (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin). Sinisi advanced to second on an error, then went to third on single by McFarland. She scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

From there, Weber allowed just three base runners the rest of the way. The key play was with no outs in the sixth, McFarland threw out freshman catcher Kylie Nottingham trying to steal second.
