Softball battles 23rd-ranked Lebanon Valley

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Beginning a schedule that will see the Ursinus College play seven games in the next four days, the Bears (15-13) began their trek with two close losses to nationally-ranked Lebanon Valley (22-5) by identical 2-1 scores, with the first game going ten innings.

In the opener, Ursinus took the early lead as sophomore centerfielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) walked, then stole second and came around on a RBI single by senior designated player Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) with two outs.

The game would stay that way until Lebanon Valley scored on a RBI single by Kristen Palmerio. Palmerio's hit scored Chelsea Kehr, who broke up a no-hit bid by sophomore pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) with one out in the fifth.

Ursinus kept the game alive and forced extra innings as they threw a LVC runner out at the plate with one out in the seventh.

In the extra frames, both teams started with a runner on second. Ursinus' best chance to score came in the ninth, as Miles was placed on second, advanced to third on a sacrifice but was thrown out at home trying to advance on a sacrifice fly to left.

LVC would score on a single by Palmerio with two outs in the tenth.

Miles finished 2-for-4 with a RBI, while Weber went the distance and struck out five and walked five in 9.2 innings of work.

In game two, Ursinus trailed 2-0 going into the sixth, before junior second baseman Abby Sido (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) singled home shortstop Cassie Brown with one out.

Gentile went 2-for-4 in game two, while Sido had the lone RBI.

Freshman Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) took the loss, allowing just two runs while striking out one.

Ursinus goes to Haverford tomorrow.
