Softball sweeps Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Ursinus swept a key doubleheader in Centennial Conference softball action on Thursday, taking both games from Swarthmore College. In game one, Ursinus held the Garnet scoreless in a 3-0, then took a 10-6 win over Swarthmore (6-18, 2-8 Centennial). The Bears improved to 14-10 overall and 7-2 in conference play heading into the final week of the season.

In game one, sophomore pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) held Swat to three base hits and retired 13 of her last 14 batters faced. Ursinus scored all three runs in sixth, starting with a home run to left center by sophomore first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional), followed by a two-run home run later in the inning by sophomore catcher Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century).

Ursinus collected seven hits in the game, with senior third baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Newtown Square) had two hits.

In game two, Ursinus pulled away from the Garnet after both teams were tied at 6-all after four innings. Ursinus scored two runs in the sixth and seventh to take the win.

Ursinus started the game with four runs in the first, capped by a two-run double by junior second baseman Abby Sido (Hershey, Pa./Hershey). Ursinus got one back in the third as  sophomore left fielder Taylor Zelitsky (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) lifted a run scoring double that scored junior first baseman Kate Kehoe (Mariposa, Calif./Mariposa County) with two outs. In the fourth, sophomore center fielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) scored on a wild pitch.

In the sixth, McFarland laced a two-run single to center that scored Pfrommer and Gallagher for a  8-6 lead. In the seventh, senior pinch hitter Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) singled and later scored on a single by Pfrommer. Gentile scored on an error by the catcher for the tenth run. Pfrommer was 4-for-4 with two runs scored in game two, while Kehoe was 3-for-4 with a run scored. McFarland and Sido each had two RBI.

Weber got the win in relief of freshman pitcher Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII). Weber pitched the final five, allowing five hits while striking out four. Whelan gave up three earned runs in two innings of work.

Ursinus heads to McDaniel on Saturday, weather permitting.
