Softball sweeps Gettysburg

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team improved to 4-1 at home on Sunday afternoon, sweeping a pair of Centennial Conference games against Gettysburg, by scores of 4-3 and 5-3. This marked four straight wins for Ursinus and five straight in conference play as the Bears improved to 5-2 in conference play heading into the final two weeks. Ursinus scored the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh in the first game, while rallying from an early 2-0 deficit in the nightcap.

In game one, Ursinus took a 3-0 lead after one inning as sophomore centerfielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) started the inning by reaching on an error, then later scored on a RBI double by senior third baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Newtown Square). After sophomore shortstop Kelli Jerdan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) walked, Jerdan and Gallagher came home on a RBI double to right center by sophomore catcher Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century).

Gettysburg came back in the fourth, scoring a run on a home run to left center by freshman designated hitter Abby Ferguson. The Bullets would tie the score in the sixth as a Bear error followed by a walked put two on with no outs. After Ursinus was able to get two outs, sophomore first baseman Sam Bader hit a two-run double to left center to tie the score at 3-all.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gallagher walked to start the inning, then was lifted for pinch runner sophomore Samantha Sinisi (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin). After senior Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) bunted Sinisi to second, Sinisi came home on a RBI double to right center by McFarland. McFarland finished game one 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Gallagher had two hits and a run scored.

Sophomore pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) struck out seven and allowed one earned run in seven innings, improving to 7-4. Junior Lanie Parr took the loss for Gettysburg, striking out three and allowing one earned run in 6.1 innings of work.

Bader had two hits for the Bullets in game one.

In game two, Gettysburg struck first as junior shortstop Catrina DelGais singled home freshman third baseman Maggie McGuire with one out for a 1-0 lead, followed by a home run to left center by senior right fielder Megan Lott with one out in the fifth for a 2-0 lead. Ursinus tied the score in the fifth as junior second baseman Abby Sido (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) hit a two-run home run, followed by two-run triple to left center by sophomore first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) with one out. Pfrommer would later score on a passed ball.

Gettysburg got one back in the seventh as Lott singled with two outs, then advanced to third on a two-base throwing error. She would score on a single to right by sophomore centerfielder Joy Hallfors with two outs.

Freshman Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) got the win, improving to 5-6. She struck out three and gave up ten hits. Sophomore Terry Snyder took the loss for Gettysburg, falling to 6-6. She gave up four earned runs and struck out two.
