Softball takes two from Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Ursinus College softball team took the long weekday trip to Washington College and came away with two wins as the Bears won the first game 2-0 before taking the nightcap 8-1 to improve to 10-10 and 3-2 in league play.

Game one was won by one hit as sophomore right fielder Sam Lowes (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) hit a two-run homerun to center field scoring her and sophomore pitcher Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) with two outs in the sixth. Weber got the win, improving to 6-4 on the season. She struck out six and walked one while allowing six hits. She also pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning.

Lowes, Weber, sophomore center fielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) and sophomore catcher Emelie McFarland (Skyesville, Md./Century) each had a hit in the game one win.

Game two saw the Bears erupt for six runs in the second inning, while scoring a run in the fourth and sixth innings.

In that six run second, Ursinus took advantage of a Shorewomen (12-14, 4-4 Centennial) defensive miscue as senior third baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Newtown Square) singled with one out, then advanced to third on two errors. She scored on a RBI single by junior first baseman Kate Kehoe (Mariposa, Calif./Mariposa County) for a 1-0 lead, before sophomore shortstop Kelli Jerdan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) tripled to right center scoring Lowes and Kehoe for a 3-0 lead. Jerdan would score on a throwing error for a 4-0 lead, while Gentile scored on a triple by sophomore left fielder Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) for a 5-0 lead. Pfrommer scored on a groundout by junior catcher Rachael Vietheer (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage).

Pfrommer, who finished game two 4-for-4 with two runs scored, singled to start the fourth then scored on a double by senior designated player Jamie Miles for a  7-0 lead.

Ursinus' final run came in the seventh as junior third baseman Cassie Brown (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored on single by Lowes.

The eight runs were more than enough for freshman pitcher Cailtin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) who improved to 4-6 with a six strikeout, one walk performance. She allowed just five hits.

Ursinus hosts Gettysburg Saturday, weather permitting.
