COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus got its first Centennial Conference win this season, with a 6-4 win over Franklin & Marshall in the first game of a softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
Darkness was the winner in game two, as twilight halted the second game after four innings with the Dips (14-7, 1-2 Centennial) leading Ursinus (8-8, 1-2 Centennial) 8-6. By NCAA rules, the game is halted and will be resumed from the point of interruption at a later date.
As for the first game, Ursinus scored six runs in the first three innings, and fended off a late F&M rally.
In the first, Ursinus got RBI hits from senior designated hitter Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) and a two-run double from senior third baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) , that scored junior catcher Rachael Vietheer (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and sophomore shortstop Kelli Jerdan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan). Miles later scored on Gallagher's double.
In the second inning, center fielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) scored on an error, while Miles scored her second run of the game on a bases loaded walk.
Sophomore first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) scored the sixth run of the game in the third, as she scored on a bobbled relay on a sacrifice fly.
Gentile and Miles each finished with two hits, while Gallagher had two RBI. Miles had two runs scored.
Freshman pitcher Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) got the win, striking out three and walking one.
Ursinus will head to Rowan on Thursday.
