Softball swept at Dickinson

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team lost both ends of a Centennial Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to Dickinson College.

In game one, Dickinson won an RBI single in the bottom of the tenth for the lone run of the game, while Dickinson (7-9, 2-2 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (6-7, 0-2 Centennial) 5-3 in game two with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

In game one, Ursinus had four hits and as sophomore centerfielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) had two singles, with senior designated hitter Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) and senior third baseman Kristen Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Newtown Square) each getting a hit in game one.

Sophomore Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) went the complete game, pitching 9.2 innings allowing eight hits. She struck out three, walked none and did not give up an earned run in the game.

Game two saw Ursinus strike early as the Bears got a 1-0 lead after the top of the fourth on a RBI single by junior catcher Rachael Vietheer (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) that scored sophomore designated player Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century).

After Dickinson tied the score in the bottom of the fourth, Ursinus went up 3-1 in the top of the sixth on a home run by Miles, followed by a RBI single from sophomore first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) that scored junior second baseman Abby Sido (Hershey, Pa./Hershey).

Dickinson, in the bottom of the inning, got four runs as they put their first two runners on base, then got three straight run scoring hits. In the seventh, Ursinus got runners on second and third with one out but could not get the runners home.

Gentile and Vietheer had two hits in the nightcap.

In the circle, freshman Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) took the loss, as she struck out two in six innings of work. She fell to 2-4 on the year.

Ursinus goes to Elizabethtown on Tuesday.
