Softball splits home opener with Neumann

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team split a pair of games in its home opener on Friday with Neumann University, falling 5-2 in the first game before defeating the Knights 4-3 in the second game which was called in the sixth due to darkness.

In the opener, the Bears managed to get nine hits but could not close the gap.

Senior Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J.) and sophomore Sam Lowes (Manasquan, N.J.) all had RBI hits in the game, with junior Rachael Vietheer (Bethpage, N.Y.) and sophomore Caitlin Higgins (Mickleton, N.J.) each slugging a triple. Vietheer and Miles each had two hits in the game.

Freshman Caitlin Whelan (Franklinville, N.J.) took the loss, as she gave up three earned runs, while striking out seven.

In game two, Ursinus scored once in the third and three times in the fourth, before Neumann plated three runs in the fifth. Ursinus took advantage of three Neumann errors, two in the bottom of the fourth to score three runs. Junior Abby Sido (Hershey, Pa.)  had a RBI hit in that inning, while sophomore Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J.) had a two-run double to end the scoring. Vietheer and Sido each had two hits in the game.

Sophomore Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa.) got the win, pitching six innings. She struck out three and walked four.

Ursinus will travel to Dickinson next Saturday to begin Centennial play.
