4x200 Relay and McMann Headline Men's T&F on Day One of Indoor Championships

LANCASTER, Pa. – The 4x200-meter relay unit broke a 13-year program record on the way to a gold medal and Griffin McMann won the weight throw title while setting the championship meet record as the Ursinus College men's track and field team wrapped up the first day of the Centennial Conference indoor championships in high-flying fashion.

The relay crown won by Octavious Carter, Aviv Hogan Appell, Bradley Duncan-Taylor, and Tyler Reilly shattered the school record which had stood since 2007 and vaulted the Bears into a tie for third place with 30 team points.

Johns Hopkins ended the day in first place with 56 points, while Muhlenberg (37) had a slim edge on Dickinson (36) for second. Haverford was fourth with 32 points, and the Bears were right behind with 30.

Nick Galbraith was aiming to defend his gold medal in the weight throw, but a foul eliminated him from the competition. In his place stepped McMann, who made sure the crown stayed in Collegeville with a dominating performance. McMann's top heave of 46-1.50 was more than a foot clear of the runner-up from Muhlenberg.

Daniel Maloney lived up this billing as the favorite in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the prelims in 8.69 seconds.

Carter and Hogan Appell blazed their way into the finals of the 60-meter dash; Carter was second in prelims at 7.07 and Hogan Appell took third with a career-best 7.15.

The Bears had two place-winners in the triple jump. Austin Bittenbender took fifth with a career-best 42-5.50, and rookie Daniel Tabor was eighth at 41-00.25, a personal best by over a foot.

The distance medley relay consisting of Ed Martinez, Payton Stanziani, Andre Kelly, and Marcos Maciel placed fifth with a 10:28.75. That mark fell less than 1.50 seconds shy of the program record, which has stood since 1987.
