Bittenbender Continues Strong Indoor Season, Shattering Hep Record

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Senior Austin Bittenbender shattered the record books on Friday night as the Ursinus College men's track and field team competed at the Dutchmen Invitational hosted by Lebanon Valley. Bittenbender broke Joseph Murray's 2015 Heptathlon score of 3050 with an incredible 4085. That mark is also good enough for ninth in all of Division III this season.

The senior crushed the 55m sprint with a time of 6.81 to start his day with 775 points. Bittenbender broke the school record after his fifth event, the 55m hurdles, bringing his overall score to 3269. Leading the whole way through seven points, he capped off the night, running the 1000m in 3:15.21.

Bittenbender is the first in program history to break 4,000 points in the Heptathlon. His overall score was just 14 points from breaking into the top-10 in Centennial Conference history.

Friday's meet continues what has been a fantastic start to the indoor season from Bittenbender. At the Bears' Bow Tie meet in December, the senior set a school record in the 300m dash.

Also breaking the school record in the Heptathlon on Friday was fellow senior Brody Johnson. Johnson's 3:16.11 1000m scored him 515 points to give him a grand total of 3206.

In the shot put, freshman Matthew Byrnes, sophomore Nick Galbraith, and junior George Psaradakis had a successful night/ Byrnes put up a mark of 12.34 meters, placing him third in the meet, while Galbraith and Psaradakis followed him with marks of 12.06m and 11.56m.

Galbraith continued his success into the weight throw breaking his own school record. The junior set a mark of 46-11.5 which bested his previous 45-5.25. Behind him were Harrison Bonanny (41-8.5) and Griffin McMann (39-6.5).

The Bears continue the indoor season next Saturday when they host the Collegeville Classic.
