LEXINGTON, Va. – Despite scratching a majority of their sprint events, the Ursinus College track and field team still found time to post a number of impressive performances as they opened the spring season at Washington and Lee's Track and Field Carnival.
On Friday, freshman Sam Pope logged a lifetime best in the long jump (21-10) to place second overall, and the rookie joined sophomore Jequan Mitchell, junior Patrick Mekongo, and senior Andrew Mackin to place eighth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:25.84).
Several Bears outperformed their previous personal bests by wide margins, including freshman Andrew Voyack, who shaved over 70 seconds off his former top performance in the 5k (16:31.49).
Senior James Hartop and sophomore Joseph Iuliucci both registered personal bests in the 10k, the latter running a 34:18.83 and the former a 35:10.29, which was more than a minute off his previous best; both qualified for the Centennial Conference outdoor championships with their performances.
On Saturday, Mackin was less than a tenth of a tick off his personal record in the 400-meter dash, where he clocked a time of 51.14 to finish fourth overall.
Pope collected the triple jump title with a leap of 43-10 in nasty conditions. In the javelin, junior Thomas Donnelly recorded a 154-10 to place sixth overall, and sophomore Adam Myers landed in 11th with a 146; both were good enough to qualify for the conference championships.
