Men's Track starts outdoor season at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's track and field team opened its 2011 outdoor portion of the schedule on Saturday at the West Chester Invitational.

The team had a strong performance in the javelin event, placing five people in the top eight. Junior Chris Salaga (Florence, N.J./Florence) was the top finisher at 167-03 feet, followed by senior Tony Santino (Delanco, N.J./Holy Cross) in third place at 161-08. Senior C.J. Yespelkis (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) was sixth at 151-02, followed by junior Lance Jones (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Central) in seventh at 149-03 and freshman Paul Luchon (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) in eighth at 148-02.

Junior Andrew Carr (Spring City, Pa./Phoenixville) was second in the shot put at 47-01.75.

In the track events, senior Brandon Gifford (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) was in fourth place in the 800 meter run at 1:58.83.

Sophomore Jordan Grannum (New Rochelle, N.Y./Brunswick School) was in sixth place in the 100 meter dash at 11.24 and took eighth in the 200 meter dash at 23.06.

In the 5k, sophomore Sam Stortz (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) was in third at 15:59.72, with freshman Jatin Narang (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) in fourth place at 16:06.12.

In the hurdle events, freshman Chris Flood (Houston, Texas/Kingwood) took third in the 400 at 1:00.32, followed by a sixth place finish in the 110 with a time of 17.25.

In the 4x1 relay, Grannum, Jones, senior Charles Prete (Herndon, Va./Kellum) and sophomore Chris Rountree (Lawnside, N.J./Haddon Heights) took third at 44.59.
