Men's Tennis Downed by Swarthmore in Spring Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Ursinus Bears men's tennis team opened its spring season portion of its schedule with a 9-0 loss to Swarthmore on Saturday morning in Centennial Conference action.

 

With the loss, the Bears fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Centennial Conference play. Meanwhile, the Garnet improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

 

Swarthmore won all three of the doubles points to take an early 3-0 lead in the match. At the first doubles spot, Swarthmore's John Nichols-Daly and Grant Dill defeated the Bears duo of sophomores Lars Jespersen and Will Oberholtzer, 8-2. Sophomores Darby Rogers and Rob Ritchie were defeated in the No. 2 doubles spot by Rushil Patel and Charlie Forceby a score of 8-2, while the duo of senior Simbarashe Kanjanda and sophomore Ethan Yu fell 8-3 at the No. 3 doubles spot to Max Pogorelov and Minh Nguyen

 

In singles, Jespersen was defeated by Josiah Myers-Lipton 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot while Oberholtzer suffered a 6-2, 6-0 setback to Pogorelov at the No. 2 spot. Ritchie fell 6-1, 6-2 to Jay Jones at the No. 3 spot and Rogers lost 8-4 to Nguyen at No. 4 singles. Junior Noah Mandel dropped an 8-0 decision at the No. 5 spot and Yu was defeated by Andy Wu 8-2 at the No. 6 spot.

 

The Bears will return to action on Monday, March 7th as they will face Wittenberg at 11:30 a.m. to begin their spring break trip in Orlando, Florida.
