Fontanese Wins Two for Men's Tennis

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Several close matches dotted the Ursinus College men's tennis team's match with Piedmont on Tuesday night, but none went the Bears' way in a close 6-3 defeat.

Matt Fontanese was a double winner for Ursinus (1-3). The sophomore teamed with classmate Mason Groff to score an 8-2 victory at number one doubles, and handled Jarrett Gray at third singles by a final of 6-1, 6-3.

Freshman Simbarashe Kanjanda and junior Connor DeFaber-Schumacher were two of the Ursinus players to come up on the losing end of a close bout, falling 8-6 to Andrew Chitty and Harrison LaBollita at number two doubles.

Senior Jake Lachowicz was the other Bear to win his singles match, edging past Chase Morris by a 6-3, 6-4 score line on the fifth court.

Groff conceded a 7-6 (6), 6-4 decision to Kanler Cumbass at number one singles, while DeFaber-Schumacher also lost a tiebreaker at two, a 6-3, 7-6 (3) defeat to LaBollita.

The Bears return to action Thursday morning against Curry.
