Seniors Star as Men's Tennis Blanks McDaniel

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team's three-man Class of 2017 were all double winners on Senior Day, helping the Bears rout McDaniel 9-0 in Centennial Conference action Saturday.

Seniors Henry Burke, Jordan Hodess, and Chanton Phan all went out and picked up two victories after being honored in a pre-match ceremony as Ursinus (11-5, 4-3) remained firmly in the hunt for the fifth and final CC playoff spot.

Other than at number one singles, where sophomore Paul Vecchio battled to a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win over Will Giles, the Bears had little trouble with overmatched McDaniel (3-12, 0-7). They lost only two games in doubles play, with Phan and junior partner Peter Shields shutting out Giles and Tate Myers at number two to start the festivities. Burke and freshman Connor DeFaber-Schumacher were 8-1 winners over Justin Arter and Nick Reed at number three, and Hodess teamed with Vecchio for the same score against Corey Glocker and Carter Trousdale at number one.

Burke's doubles victory made him the 13th player in program history to reach the 50-win milestone. The senior then collected a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of Trousdale at third singles.

Phan rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Glocker at second singles, and Hodess polished off a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Myers at number four.

Freshman Devin Paulison secured a 6-3, 6-3 win against Logan Lindemann in the fifth flight, and sophomore Jake Lachowicz handled Adam Finnerty 6-1, 6-3.

The men's tennis team hosts Oneonta State on Monday, April 17.
