Men's Tennis Upended by Wilkes

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Contending with their fifth regionally ranked opponent this season, the Ursinus College men's tennis team put up a game fight against Wilkes, but a sweep of doubles play propelled the Colonels to a 6-3 non-conference victory.

Wilkes (15-1), ranked 18th in the Atlantic South region, put Ursinus (10-5) behind the eight ball with three straight doubles wins, but the Bears did manage a split of individual action against a quality squad whose only loss of the year came at the hands of Haverford, which is ranked 13th in the Atlantic South.

Sophomore Max Oberholtzer upped his dual-match record to a sparkling 13-2 at number one singles, and Sunday's result may have been his most impressive. Oberholtzer's 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory came against the Colonels' Courtney Murphy, the 25th-ranked player in the region.

Junior Chanton Phan delivered a 6-3, 6-0 win at fourth singles, and freshman Paul Vecchio extended his personal winning streak to four courtesy of a 7-6 (2), 6-2 decision in the fifth flight.

The Bears conclude their non-conference slate with a challenging trip to TCNJ on Tuesday, April 19. The Lions were ranked as high as 37th in Division III before dropping out of the most recent set of ITA rankings.
