GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team built upon a historic win with a straightforward one, dominating Gettysburg to the tune of an 8-1 final in Centennial Conference action Saturday.
Sophomore Max Oberholtzer and freshman Paul Vecchio collected an 8-1 victory at first doubles, part of a sweep for Ursinus (10-4, 2-4), which came home from the Battlefield with a second consecutive CC victory in tow.
Senior captains Tyler Arsenault and Dalton Lynch prevailed by an 8-4 count at number two, while junior Henry Burke teamed with sophomore Peter Shields for an 8-6 victory in the third flight.
Christian Deschapelles' victory at third singles for Gettysburg (6-9, 1-6) was all that interrupted the Bears' run of success. Arsenault cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 rout in the second singles flight, and Vecchio produced a 6-4, 6-0 victory out of the fourth spot.
Oberholtzer was on the right side of a 6-2, 6-3 verdict on the top court, and Shields picked up a 6-3, 6-3 result at number five. Burke made sure his first singles action of the spring ended on a high note, the junior outlasting Andrew Corwin for a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-7 victory at number six.
Two days removed from their first victory over a regionally ranked foe in school history, a 5-4 triumph against Washington College, the men's tennis team goes for another on Sunday, when Wilkes comes to Collegeville for a non-conference tilt. The Colonels are ranked 18th in the Atlantic South region.
