Men's Tennis Competes at ITA Championships

The Ursinus College Men's Tennis team traveled to Fredericksburg, VA last weekend to take part in the ITA South/Southeast Regional Championships, held on the campus of the University of Mary Washington.  Representing the Bears at the event were seniors Tyler Arsenault and Dalton Lynch, junior Chanton Phan, and sophomores Caleb Kramer and Max Oberholtzer.

Oberholtzer and Kramer both took part in the Championship draws of singles and doubles.  Oberholtzer started the singles portion of his weekend by defeating Joey Frank of Dickinson by a 6-2, 6-2 final.  In the round of 32, he was toppled by Kunal Wadwani, the 8th seed from Carnegie Mellon.  Kramer dropped a heartbreaker in the first round, narrowly losing a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3 decision to Patrick Hughes of Mary Washington.

In the championship doubles draw, the pair put up a spirited battle before dropping a tough 8-5 decision to a team from nationally ranked Washington & Lee.

Juniors Arsenault and Lynch also gained entry into the Championship Doubles draw, and they took full advantage by winning their first round match against a doubles team from Randolph College, 8-4.  In the second round, they were ousted by the #1 seeds, all-Americans Mike Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh of Johns Hopkins.

Arsenault took part in the championship singles event, where he drew the unenviable task of facing former national #1 Abhishek Alla of Carnegie Mellon.  Arsenault acquitted himself well before eventually falling, 6-2, 6-1.  In the consolation round, he picked up an 8-4 victory over the #1 player from Shenandoah University.

Lynch and Phan were selected for the B2 singles draw, which was shortened due to the weekend rain, but they made the most of their opportunities.  Phan went 2-0 on the weekend, defeating players from Shenendoah and Dickinson, by 8-1 and 8-2 scores respectively.  Lynch won his first match over Luke Weaver of Washington College, 8-4, before dropping a close 8-6 match to Axel Jobeus of Mary Washington.

The tournament closed the competitive portion of the fall season for the Bears.  The next time they hit the courts, it will be in Orlando, Florida, on the team's Spring Break trip in March 2016.
