Men's Tennis Opens Fall Play at ITA Regionals

The Ursinus College Men's Tennis Team sent six players to compete at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships over the weekend.  The tournament was held at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Freshman Max Oberholtzer was the Bears lone representative in Championship Draw. Oberholtzer was faced with tough sledding right out of the gate as he drew the #2 seed in the first round, Abhishek Alla of Carnegie Mellon.  Alla was the defending champion at the event, and spent much of last season as the number one ranked player in the nation in Division III. Oberholtzer battled but came out on the short end of a 6-2, 6-1 decision.

In the consolations, Oberholtzer found success with a win over Randolph-Macon's Ryan Byrd, but then ran into another tough player in the #9 seed, Nicholas Garcia of Johns Hopkins. Oberholtzer pushed Garcia before falling 6-1, 6-4.

Junior Tyler Arsenault won his opening round in the B1 flight, taking out Joey Caracappa of Goucher, 6-3, 6-3.  He then lost his quarterfinal match to Connor O'Kelly of Carnegie Mellon, 6-0, 6-2.

Caleb Kramer got his freshman campaign off on the right foot in the B2 draw, as he rallied for a 3-6, 6-0, 10-8 win over David Dodsen of Hampden-Sydney College.  In the quarterfinal match, Kramer would climb out of a huge 6-1, 4-1 hole against Swarthmore's Harrison Lands to force a second set tie breaker before falling, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

Sophomore Henry Burke also found first round success, winning his opening match in the B4 draw over Alex Curnow of Randolph-Macon.  In the quarterfinals against Grant Hudson of Salisbury, Burke came up just shy in a 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 10-4 loss.

Junior Dalton Lynch as the only singles player to make it to Day 2 as he won this opening tilt in the B6 draw against Jan LaSota of Catholic, 7-5, 6-3.  In the quarters, Lynch came through with a tight 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 win over Kelson Weber of Salisbury.

In the Sunday morning semi-finals, Lynch jumped out to a 3-1 lead against Logan Moore, but could not sustain the attack in a 6-4, 6-1 loss.

The Bears also competed in the doubles draws.  Freshmen Max Oberholtzer and Caleb Kramer pulled off one of the best comebacks of the day on Saturday in the Championship Draw.  After falling behind early and seemingly unable to mount a comeback, the first year duo found themselves trailing Seth Hoesman and Joey Caracappa of Goucher 7-5.  The light suddenly went on however, and they put on the jets to take four straight games and steal the match, 9-7.  In the second round, they faced the tournament's sixth seeded team from Carnegie Mellon, and suffered an 8-1 setback.

In the B1 doubles draw, Tyler Arsenault and Henry Burke made it through day one with two impressive victories.  After dispatching a team from St. Mary's 8-2 in the first round, they faced Jake Smith and Dillon Sykes, a talented duo from Christopher Newport.  With the match knotted at 4-4, Arsenault and Burke played a flawless four games to take the match, 8-4.

The Sunday semi-finals did not go their way however, and they were knocked out by a team from Haverford, 8-3.

Finally, senior Mike Melchiorre and junior Dalton Lynch took part in the B2 doubles draw.  After taking out a team from Shenandoah 8-4, they were downed in the quarterfinals by a team from Penn State-Harrisburg, 8-4.

The Bears will return for their final fall action this weekend, as they host a double header against Lebanon Valley College (10:30 start) and Scranton University (3:00 pm start) on the Ace Bailey Courts at Ursinus College.
