Closing Strong
The Ursinus College Men's tennis team rode the strength of a dominant doubles performance to a 7-2 victory at Muhlenberg College Saturday afternoon.  The Bears close the year winning 3 of their final 4 conference matches for a 13-7 overall record, and a 3-6 mark in the Centennial.
Ursinus got a quick start as they put together their best doubles performance of the season, racing to a 3-0 lead in the match.  The visitors dropped only 7 games across the 3 doubles flights on the day.  In the first flight, seniors Matt Hope and Evan Stutchin registered an 8-2 win.  In the second flight, seniors Evan Lord and Logan Metcalf-Kelly notched their single-season program record 6th conference doubles victory in an 8-3 win.  At third doubles, Tyler Arsenault and Henry Burke erased a 2-1 deficit by ripping off 7 straight games for an 8-2 victory.
In singles, the Bears won 4 of 6 matches to seal the triumph.  At first singles, Stutchin earned his 67th career win with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniel Lakhman.  In the third flight, Arsenault won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.  Seniors Dylan Marsh and Logan Metcalf-Kelly closed the scoring for Ursinus as they both won in three set matches.
"That was a terrific performance by the seniors today," Bears head coach Pete Smith remarked.  "They have achieved so much in their four years here.  As a group, they led us to 50 wins over their tenure, which before they arrived, was an unthinkable accomplishment.  They went to the Centennial Conference playoffs.  And above all they were a great group of guys to work with every day.  They will not soon be forgotten."
Stutchin finishes a brilliant career with multiple program records, including most singles wins in a single season (18, tied with Tyler Arsenault), career singles wins (67), career doubles wins (45) and overall career wins (112).  He became the first Bear tennis player in history to record 100 career wins.  Additionally, senior Evan Lord set the record for doubles wins in a season as he notched 16 doubles victories this year.
