Take Two

Take Two

The Ursinus College men's tennis team ran their record to 9-2 on Saturday as they swept through Reading, defeating PSU-Berks 9-0 and Alvernia 8-1.  In the process, senior Evan Stutchin became the first player in program history to record 100 career victories.  Stutchin recorded his 59th and 60th singles victories today to go with 40 career doubles wins.

"I am kind of out of superlatives," head coach Pete Smith said of Stutchin.  "Evan has done everything this program has ever asked of him and more.  100 career victories is not something that was ever even considered possible before Evan showed up.  Even more amazing is that he has recorded every victory playing from either the first singles or first doubles slot.  He has truly been a program changer for us.  I am very proud of him."

The Bears started the day with a shut out against Penn State Berks.  In doubles, they only dropped six games, and singles was more of the same.  The Bears nailed down six straight set wins, as Stutchin, Logan Metcalf-Kelly, Dalton Lynch, Dylan Marsh, Henry Burke and Jordan Hodess were all winners.

Against Alvernia, Ursinus encountered a little more resistance in the doubles portion of the match.  After Evan Lord and Logan Metcalf-Kelly won the second flight 8-0, Tyler Arsenault and Mike Melchiorre did the same in the third flight with another 8-0 win.  But Alvernia pulled out a 9-8 win in the first doubles flight, keeping the Crusaders within striking distance at 2-1.

The Bears quickly took charge in singles however, preventing any chance for an upset. Lord, Arsenault, Stutchin, Metcalf-Kelly, Lynch and Melchiorre were all victorious to give Ursinus the 8-1 win.

The Bears are off until Thursday, when they host the Moravian Greyhounds at 4 pm at the Ace Bailey Courts.
