The Ursinus College men's tennis team finished the competitive portion of their fall schedule on Saturday by sweeping a home doubleheader, defeating Rutgers-Camden 9-0 and York College 7-2.  In the process, senior Evan Stutchin became the winningest player in program history, earning the 51st and 52nd wins of his singles career.  He broke the record held by head coach Pete Smith, who won 50 singles matches as Bear from 1988-1991.

"Honestly, I am so happy for Evan.  I played so long ago, it was time for somebody to step up and and break that record.  Truth be told, Evan is a better player than I ever was.  He is very deserving of this.  And, he has an entire spring season to go, so I expect him to tack on many more wins as he finishes up what is becoming a pretty legendary career."

In the morning match, the Ursinus (2-0) dominated Rutgers-Camden (1-2).  Upon taking a quick 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match, the singles lineup followed suit with convincing victories.  Evan Stutchin, Tyler Arsenault, Alex Elbogen, Logan Metcalf-Kelly, Dalton Lynch and freshman Jordan Hodess all won in straight sets to stake the Bears to the 9-0 win.

In the afternoon match, York College (3-1) proved to be no pushover.  In a very tight group of doubles matches, the Bears emerged with a 2-1 lead.  Stutchin and Matt Hope prevailed 8-6 at first doubles, and Evan Lord and Alex Elbogen continued their strong doubles play with an 8-3 victory.

In singles, the Bears took 5 of 6 matches en route to the 7-2 triumph.  The back of the lineup proved to be a key part of the win, as senior Dylan Marsh dispatched Jake Greenstein at fifth singles 6-1, 6-2, and freshman Henry Burke won his collegiate debut with an 8-4 win over Zack Hansen.

"It was a good start to the playing season," Smith said.  "This is a good, veteran team.  Making the Centennial Conference playoffs last year was a great achievement, and I think these kids have what it takes to make it back there.  I am looking forward to the spring season and seeing what we can accomplish."

The Bears continue their season in early March, when they travel to Orlando, FL, for a week of Spring break matches.
