Men's Tennis turns in solid performance at ITAs

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Ursinus College Men's Tennis team had a fruitful weekend in Fredericksburg, Virginia at the Southeast Regional ITA Championships.  All five players who competed earned at least two wins, and junior Dylan Marsh (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) swept thru four matches in the B5 Singles draw to win the title without dropping a set.

In championship singles, junior Evan Stutchin (Cape Coral, Fla./Canterbury School) broke a 22-year drought by becoming the first Ursinus player to win a match in the main draw since 1990.  Stutchin defeated Roanoke's Matt Kessler 6-1, 6-2, before falling to the #6 seed Kevin Caulfield of Haverford.

In B3 singles, freshman Tyler Arsenault  (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) won his collegiate debut on Satuday by defeating Lewis Young of Roanoke.  After another Saturday win, Arsenault found himself playing Centennial Conference foe Joel Novick of Washington College in the semi-finals.  Arsenault prevailed in an epic 3 hour and 45 minute battle, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-6 (1).  With less then an hour to recover from that match, Arsenault fell in the B3 title match to Jake Weisenthal of Haverford, 6-2, 6-2.

In the B4 singles draw, junior Logan Metcalf-Kelly (Rockwell, Texas/Rockwall) performed well, earning two wins on Saturday over opponents from Christopher Newport University and PSU-Abington.  On Sunday morning, Metcalf-Kelly fell in the semi-finals to Hamza Pataudi of Franklin & Marshall, 6-2, 6-2.

Marsh was the story of the weekend for the Bears in the B5 singles draw.  After winning two matches on Saturday over opponents from Virginia Wesleyan and Juniata, Marsh faced Shane Gunther from Salisbury in the semi-finals.  Marsh defeated Gunther 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the championship match against Jay Guzzone of St. Mary's College.  Neither Marsh nor Guzzone had dropped a set headed into the finals, but Marsh won the critical points time and time again en route to a 7-5, 6-0 victory.  The B5 Championship was the first ITA Championship won by an Ursinus player in any flight in team history.

Another Ursinus freshman, Alex Elbogen (Spring Lake, N.J./Laurel Springs) , competed in the B6 singles draw.  After beating Wyatt Paulishak of St. Mary's College in the first round, Elbogen lost in the second round to Alex Haley of Shenendoah.

In doubles action, Stutchin and Marsh competed in the Championship Draw.  The lost to the #5 seeds from Johns Hopkins in the first round, eventual champions Tanner Brown and Erik Lim.  In the consolation round, they played well before falling to Thomas Johnson and John Kirby of Washington & Lee, 8-5.

In the B2 doubles championship, Arsenault and Elbogen went to work in the backdraw after dropping a first round match.  They defeated a team from Grove City, and followed that with an 8-6 win over Spencer Bullock and Tyler Chang of Virginia Weslyan.  In the B3 backdraw title match, Arsenault and Elbogen played powerful doubles on the way to an 8-2 win over Daniel Lakhman and Eric Chavis of Muhlenberg.

The men's tennis team will be in fall action for the final time this weekend when they hit the road for a doubleheader vs. York College and Lebanon Valley on Saturday.
