Twice As Nice

Twice As Nice

The Ursinus Men's Tennis team swept a home doubleheader Saturday, defeating McDaniel in the opening match 5-4, and defeating Rutgers-Camden 8-1 in the nightcap.

Against McDaniel, the Bears (12-8, 1-6 CC) continued their recent strong doubles play by taking a 3-0 lead by sweeping all 3 doubles flights.  David Rowe and Mike Melchiorre got the first doubles point with an 8-3 win at third doubles.  Evan Stutchin and Matt Hope followed suit with an 8-2 win at first doubles, and Evan Lord and Logan Metcalf-Kelly got the final point with an 8-5 win at second doubles.

After Stutchin recorded an efficient 6-1, 6-3 win at first singles, the Bears had a 4-0 lead and were closing in on the conference win.  McDaniel (6-7) wouldn't go quietly though, as they posted wins at third and fourth singles to cut the lead to 4-2.  Ursinus found the final point in the sixth singles flight, when David Rowe clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

In the second match vs. Rutgers-Camden (9-4), Ursinus once again was dominant in doubles.  Evan Stutchin and Matt Hope were winners in the first flight, and David Rowe and Mike Melchiorre won again in the third flight.  At the second flight, Dylan March and Brent Stevenson recorded an 8-4 win stake the Bears to a 3-0 lead.

In singles, some Ursinus College Men's Tennis history was made by first singles player Evan Stutchin.  Stutchin, a sophomore, defeated Tyler Eager 6-2, 6-3, to record his 16th singles victory of the year.  That broke a 22-year old record held by Head Coach Pete Smith, who went 15-3 at first singles in the 1990 season.  Stutchin is now 16-5 this year.

"I am so happy for Evan," Smith said.  "He really is a workhorse.  I have come to expect so much from him, and he consistently delivers.  To play #1 singles in one of the best Division III conferences in the country and notch 16 victories is amazing.  As a sophomore captain, he is everything we expect from our student-athletes, on and off the court."

The Bears went on to win 4 of the 5 remaining singles matches against Rutgers-Camden to complete the 8-1 victory.  The win, which was the 12th for the Bears this season, ties the record for wins in a season by the men's tennis program, which has only been done once before.  The 1985 squad also recorded 12 victories.

Ursinus is back on the courts Monday, when they travel to Haverford for a 4:00 Centennial Conference Match.
