Sweeping Through Town

READING, Pa. - The Ursinus Men's Tennis team swept PSU-Berks and Alvernia Saturday, taking both matches by 9-0 counts.  The Bears improved to 7-2 on the year with the wins.

In the opener, Ursinus took immediate control by sweeping the doubles matches vs. PSU-Berks in impressive fashion.  The first doubles team of Evan Stutchin and Evan Lord won 8-1, while second doubles team Matt Hope and Dylan Marsh took home an 8-3 victory.  The third doubles tandem of David Rowe and Mike Melchiorre followed suit with an 8-2 win.

Singles play was more of the same, as Stutchin led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the first flight.  Lord, Hope, Marsh, Rowe and Melchiorre were also victorious in straight sets.

In the afternoon match vs. Alvernia, the Bears again took charge with an impressive performance in doubles.  Stutchin and Lord were pushed, but prevailed 8-5.  Second and third doubles used the same lineup as the morning match, and they won 8-2 and 8-1, respectively.

The Bears then swept the singles matches to conclude their second 9-0 win of the day.

"i was very pleased with our effort today," head coach Pete Smith said.  'We have really struggled through some tough injuries and illnesses recently.  The guys who went out there today were all business and they came through nicely.  We are going to need even more focus and poise as the conference season starts this week."

The Bears are back on the courts at home on Thursday, as they host Swarthmore at 4 pm.  Swarthmore is currently ranked as the #20 team in the nation by the ITA.
