Men's Tennis closes Spring Break with 1-1 day

 
The Ursinus College Men's Tennis team split their final 2 matches on Spring Break Thursday, defeating King's 8-1, but then dropping a marathon 5-4 decision to Clark University.

In the King's match, Ursinus jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Matt Hope and Brent Stevenson won 8-4 at second doubles, while David Rowe and Logan Metcalf-Kelly won at third doubles by an identical score.

The Bears then put the pedal down in singles, winning all 6 matches in straight sets.

In the nightcap vs. Clark, play commenced in a singles-first format. Ursinus got wins at first singles as Evan Stutchin defeated Diego Angel 7-5, 6-4, and also at 3rd singles, as Brent Stevenson downed Zack Goodstein, 6-2, 7-5. Clark claimed the other four singles flights however, and took a 4-2 lead heading into doubles.

Needing to sweep doubles to win the match, the Bears went to work. Third doubles team David Rowe and Logan Metcalf-Kelly rallied from a 3-6 deficit to win 5 straight games and pull out a thrilling 8-6 win, cutting Clark's lead to 4-3. The Bears first doubles team of Evan Stutchin and Evan Lord followed suit, winning 8-6 to tie the match at 4-4.

The second doubles match was a back and forth affair, with Matt Hope and Brent Stevenson trading leads with Clark's Dan Stein and Josh Burger throughout the match. The match went right down to the wire as the teams arrived at an 8-8 tie and headed to a tiebreaker. Clark was able to punch through and pull out a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker and secure the dramatic 5-4 victory.

The Bears finished the Spring Break trip with a 4-2 mark, moving to 5-2 overall on the season. They resume play on Saturday, March 17th, when they travel to Alvernia and PSU-Berks for a doubleheader.
