A Pair Of Aces

The Ursinus Men's Tennis team continued their strong play Tuesday, sweeping St. Mary's (MN) University and Cornerstone University (MI) in Orlando, Florida.

The Bears were in a tight match early against St. Mary's, taking a 2-1 led after doubles play. Matt Hope and Brent Stevenson battled for an 8-5 win at second doubles, while David Rowe and Logan Metcalf-Kelly were superb in an 8-3 win at third doubles.

In singles, Metcalf-Kelly got on the board first with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the sixth flight.  After a St. Mary's win followed in the third flight, the Bears reeled off 4 straight singles wins to take the match by a score of 7-2.  Evan Lord, Matt Hope and Dylan Marsh all posted straight set victories, and Evan Stutchin closed the match with a thrilling 6-2, 7-6 (12-10) win at the first flight.  The win by Ursinus snapped a 4-match winning streak for St. Mary's (7-3).

In the evening match, the Bears got a quick start by sweeping the doubles from Cornerstone for a 3-0 lead.  Freshman Mike Melchiorre made his collegiate debut a memorable one, teaming with Dylan Marsh at third doubles to post an 8-3 victory.

The singles were more of the same, with Ursinus sweeping all 6 flights for a 9-0 win.  Melchiorre pulled a repeat performance with his second win of the evening, a 6-3, 6-4 win at sixth flight singles.  Stutchin, Stevenson, Sean Kelley, Bennett Krantz and Logan Metcalf-Kelly also notched wins in the victory.

The Bears (4-1) will be back in action on Thursday, when they face Kings College and Clark University in their final matches of the Spring Break trip.
