Carkhuff, Lear Named CSCAA Scholar All-Americans

RICHMOND, Va. – Two members of the Ursinus swimming team were named to the Scholar All-American Team of the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), the organization announced Wednesday.

Recent graduates Ryan Carkhuff and Sophie Lear garnered first-team honors. For Lear, it was the second time in her career being named a Scholar All-American.

First-team Scholar All-Americans achieved a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher and were invited to compete at their respective national championship, while second-team selections also earned a 3.50 GPA or higher and achieved a "B" time standard for the national championship or participated at a diving zone qualification meet.

Carkhuff capped off a tremendous Ursinus career this winter by becoming the first men's swimmer in Ursinus program history to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet. He swam in the prelims of the 50 free, 100 free, and 200 free and topped his own school record in the 100 free on a time of 45.08. Carkhuff finished his collegiate tenure with two school records and four medals at Centennial Championships. He earned the silver medal in the 50 free and the bronze in the 100 free at the 2022 Centennial Conference Championships in 2022.

Lear put the finishing touches on her illustrious Bears career by qualifying for the NCAA Championship meet for the second time in her career and earning All-American honors in both the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Lear registered her second career Centennial Conference Most Outstanding Women's Swimmer award at the conference championships back in February and was also named the Centennial Conference Women's Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Lear added three individual gold medals and two relay golds at the 2022 Centennial Championships, finishing off her collegiate career by going undefeated in individual events at the conference meet. She set the program and Centennial Conference record in the 50 freestyle during the championship meet. For her career, Lear registered 12 gold medals at the Centennial Championship meet. She was also named to the PhillySIDA Academic All-Area team as well.
