LANCASTER, Pa. – Colin McNamara and Maxwell Coulter erased two of the program's oldest records and James Callaghan grabbed a silver medal as the Ursinus College men's swimming team finished Day 3 of the Centennial Conference Championship in fifth place.
McNamara and Coulter each established their new team standards in the morning's preliminary session, McNamara doing so in the 100 fly and Coulter in the 100 breast. Both lowered program marks that had stood since 2012, making them two of the three longest-standing records on the Ursinus board.
Gettysburg has a firm grasp on the team lead with 536.5 points. Swarthmore is second with 374.5, followed closely by Washington College (361) and Franklin & Marshall (360).
Bidding to become the first 400 IM champion in program history, Callaghan still managed a silver medal with a time of 4:08.58, about two seconds behind Dickinson's Will Freeman.
Junior Kevin Gill placed 13th in 4:22.68, knocking more than six seconds off his preliminary mark.
McNamara, who posted a clocking of 51.32 in the prelims to upend Chris Smith's 2012 team record, touched the wall in 51.49 for a fourth-place effort in the finals.
Like McNamara, Coulter eclipsed a six-year-old team standard in the morning prelims, posting a 58.71 to edge Dave Yazbeck's former record. The junior completed the 100 breast final in 59.33, good for 11th. Juniors Reid Luksic (1:00.16) and Devin Nielsen (1:00.88) added to the Bears' team tally in the B final.
Sophomores Jacob Menzer (1:42.21) and Casey Lear (1:42.66) finished just off the podium in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 free. Sophomore Jared Krawetz (1:44.74) and junior Daniel Becker (1:44.76) were neck and neck in a 12-13 showing.
Coulter, McNamara, and Lear teamed with freshman Michael Prior to finish fifth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:29.87. Prior capped the evening with a sixth-place performance in the 100 back (52.53).
The CC championship meet concludes on Sunday, beginning with prelims in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 1650 free.
