Benn Captures Bronze in 100 Back at CC Championships

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior William Benn picked up a bronze medal in the 100-yard backstroke to highlight the Ursinus College men's swimming team's performance on the second day of the Centennial Conference championships. The Bears stayed in sixth place in the team standings with one more day remaining.

Host Gettysburg (470) will enter the final day of competition with a slim lead over Swarthmore (450), with Washington College (394.5) in third. The Bears take a team score of 237 points into Sunday's action.

Benn, freshman Devin Nielsen, sophomore Colin McNamara, and freshman Travis Venables placed fifth in the 200-yard medley relay finals (1:35.63), while seniors James Marrone, Chris Hoops, and Nick DiPalo joined junior Spencer Collopy to finish fourth in the B finals (1:37.51).

Freshman Kevin Gill (4:19.65) and senior Henry Nonack (4:21.98) were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the B finals of the 400-yard IM.

McNamara earned a point with an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly finals (53.03).

Junior Marcus Wagner turned in a sixth-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.87). Classmate Dylan Cooper (1:46.02) and Venables (1:46.82) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the B finals.

Four Bears garnered points in the 100-yard breaststroke, all of them in the B finals. Collopy led the Ursinus pack with a 59.48, good for second all-time at Ursinus. Nielsen (59.76; 4th all-time) was third and fellow rookie Maxwell Coulter (59.97; fifth all-time) was fourth. Another freshman, Reid Luksic, rounded out the field with a time of 1:01.41 to give the Bears 21 points in the event.

Benn scored a bronze medal with a time of 52.22 in the 100-yard backstroke, where Marrone was fifth in the B final.

Senior Chris Barthold, Cooper, Gill, and Wagner finished seventh in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
