Men's Swimming Drops Dramatic Decision at F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall captured the last event of the night to break a 94-all stalemate and hand the Ursinus College men's swimming team a hard-fought 105-100 setback in Centennial Conference action tonight.

Senior Nick DiPalo, junior Dylan Cooper, sophomore Colin McNamara, and freshman Travis Venables were edged out by a mere .19 seconds in the 200 free relay as Franklin & Marshall (3-4, 2-3) claimed a dramatic victory.

Junior Marcus Wagner won the 1000 free (10:13.37), the 500 free (4:49.96), and the 200 free (1:47.29) for Ursinus (4-4, 2-4).

Venables registered an individual triumph in the 50 free, with his time of 22.28 just enough to hold off DiPalo (22.41) in second.

Freshman James Callaghan placed third in the 1000 free and 200 IM for the Bears, while McNamara notched a second-place showing in the 100 fly; freshman Johnny Myers took third in that event.

Venables was second in the 100 free (49.45) before junior William Benn claimed victory in the 100 back with a clocking of 54.20. Wagner proceeded with a dominant performance in the 500 free, outpacing the Diplomats' runner-up by almost 10 full seconds. Sophomore Chris Barthold was right behind in third, with freshman Kevin Gill touching the wall in fourth.

Freshman Maxwell Coulter placed third in the 100 breast before the pulse-pounding relay finish.

The Bears return to Lancaster for the F&M Pre-Championship Invitational on Saturday, February 13.
