Men's Swimming Second at Golden Ram Classic

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's swimming team came back from West Chester University with a second-place finish in the three-team Golden Ram Classic, collecting 675 points to place land behind the hosts (910) and well ahead of Albright College (319) in their final action of 2015.

Junior Marcus Wagner (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) added another victory to his ledger, this time edging classmate Dylan Cooper (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent) and sophomore Christopher Barthold (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) with a time of 1:47.08 in the 200-yard freestyle.

Junior William Benn (Summit, N.J./Summit) placed third in the 100-yard backstroke, and sophomore Colin McNamara (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) took fourth in the 100-yard butterfly.

Wagner finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 4:46.22. McNamara and Hoops then joined senior Alec Heckman (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser Area) and freshman Travis Venables (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) for a third-place performance in the 200-yard freestyle relay, and Wagner, Barthold, and Cooper teamed with freshman Kevin Gill (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) to take third in the 800-yard freestyle relay. That ended the first day of competition, after which Ursinus found itself in second with 320 points, behind West Chester's 469.

Wagner added another fourth-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle, and the foursome of Benn, senior Keith Larkin (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley), McNamara, and Cooper placed third in the 400-yard medley relay.

Larkin touched the wall in fifth in the 200-yard IM, with freshman James Callaghan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) finishing sixth, and McNamara took sixth in the 200-yard butterfly. Venables was sixth in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle, where junior Spencer Collopy (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) was fifth and freshman Daniel Becker (Fairfax, Va./Lake Braddock SS) was sixth.

Benn then captured victory in the 200-yard backstroke, outpacing the Golden Rams' closest competitor by almost 1.5 seconds and touching the wall in 1:56.68. Senior James Marrone (Croton on Hudson, N.Y./Croton-Harmon) placed fourth in that event, followed by classmate Henry Nonack (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) in fifth.

Larkin was fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke, and the group of Cooper, McNamara, Venables, and Wagner ending the day with a third-place showing in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
