Men's Swimming Outpaced by Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's swimming team suffered a 161-99 defeat at the hands of unbeaten Swarthmore in a Centennial Conference dual meet this afternoon.

Swarthmore (6-0, 3-0) prevailed in four of the first five events to build a sizeable lead before Ursinus (5-2, 2-2) put forth its best performance of the day in the 200-yard butterfly. Senior Christian Hoops (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) led a 1-2-3 finish in 2:01.44, with sophomore Colin McMnamara (Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) and freshman James Callaghan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) were second and third, respectively.

Junior Marcus Wagner (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) continued his impressive campaign with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 4:52.21 to outpace the Garnet's runner-up by more than two seconds. Wagner was also victorious in the 1000-yard freestyle with a clocking of 10:04.54, nearly nine ticks ahead of the next finisher.

The Bears closed the day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay behind the quarter of freshman Devin Nielsen (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), McNamara, freshman Travis Venables (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), and junior Dylan Cooper (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent).

Junior William Benn (Summit, N.J./Summit) was runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke (54.50), and McNamara placed second in the 100-yard butterfly, where Hoops took fourth. Callahan touched second in the 400-yard IM.

Freshman Kevin Gill (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) was third in the 1000-yard freestyle, while Venables took fourth in the 50-yard freestyle and Cooper did so in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle. Venables placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle, with Wagner landing in sixth. Senior James Marrone (Croton on Hudson, N.Y./Croton-Harmon) finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, freshman Maxwell Coulter (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) took third, with senior Keith Larkin (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) in fourth and Nielsen in fifth. Sophomore Christopher Barthold (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle.
